X-Wedge from S & S

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

We’d received some interest from people about the new S&S X-Wedge, so we tracked down this info on the product. Hope it helps. This was taken from the X-Wedge site. With EPA and CARB restrictions becoming more and more prevalent, S&S Cycle looked to the future and designed a new OE specific engine more in line with environmental expectations. This next generation v-twin is a departure from S&S’ traditional engine design and a step toward the future of air-cooled, pushrod operated v-twins.

In October of 2002, a small group of S&S Product Development team members were given a green light by the S&S senior management team to start on a new engine design to ensure that S&S OE customers would have engines available when the emissions laws tightened up. It needed to be an air-cooled v-twin, with pushrod operated overhead valves and meet the upcoming 2008 ARB and 2010 EPA regulations.

By October of 2003 the first prototype design was under way and a running test version spent time on the S&S dyno in December of 2004. So, in just two years a concept became a design, which turned into a running prototype. In just five more short months, April 2005 saw another prototype installed in a chassis and ridden around Wisconsin. When the prototype had reached production intent, two different dyno tests were performed—one to simulate highway operation at 3200rpm for 800 hours and another that ran a 200-hour duty cycle on a dyno that varied engine speed and load from idle to full-throttle. This rigorous testing was necessary before any further development could be done. Once the S&S Product Development team was satisfied with the engine’s durability, they finalized the functional design.

The engine, code-named Fred around the S&S offices during development, is the all-new S&S X-Wedge (pronounced “cross” or “ex”)—a 56-degree, closed-loop fuel-injected, three-cam, overhead valve v-twin designed to deliver the performance expected of an S&S engine, but still comply with EPA laws. One key engineering feature is the versatility of the design to create a range of engine sizes. The engine design will accept bore sizes from 4 1/8” to 4 ½” and the stroke can go from 4 1/8” to 4 3/8”–equating to a displacement range of 110 to 139 inches! The 56-degree v-twin utilizes three serpentine belt-driven, large base-circle cams; two exhaust cams and a common intake cam achieve almost straight pushrod angles that combine with automotive-style rockers and roller tappets to create an incredibly quiet, EPA noise conscious valve train.

Induction on the X-Wedge is done with the new S&S single-bore throttle body pumping fuel and air into a wedge shaped combustion chamber contained in a head with a five stud bolt pattern and increased fin area for maximum cooling abilities. The head has the fuel injector mounted directly in it for even more efficient combustion. A non-structural rocker cover that will allow various OE builders to design a look specific to their brand covers the aforementioned automotive rockers

I’m not big on the cheap stuff coming from across the pond (or even that crap that is made here in US by some people) as a matter of fact. But one thing i will do is give credit where credit is due. This artist, Yoshihito Tomobe, is turning out some awesome motorcycle artwork and though he’s not from USA, he’s worth checkin’ into.

Congrat’s to Chopper Chick’s and National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Monday, March 26th, 2007

We want to congratulate all the women that participated in the Chopper Build off to benefit National Breast Cancer Foundation.
ChopperChickCrew_Daytona_07
Daytona, FLA—The Chopper Chick Crew, a dedicated, all-female team of bike builders, built a chopper in seven hours and 13 minutes on March 8th and 9th at the Daytona International Speedway and donated it to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The build was a complete success and the Crew couldn’t be happier about the results. The bike was shipped, courtesy of Harley-Davidson Shipping, to the foundation after it was finished. The Pink Ribbon Chopper will be used for fund raising, or any other medium that raises awareness and funding to help the foundation toward its goals. The Pink Ribbon Chopper is the second bike the crew has built for Breast Cancer, but the first for the foundation.

Built in front of a live audience, the Pink Ribbon Chopper is a long lean hard tail in white with a pink ribbon painted on the gas tank and a pink rear fender in the shape of a ribbon. The chopper also has wheels with huge pink ribbons as spokes. We are just so excited that the build went off as well as it did, but we couldn’t have done it without our sponsors. So many people gave their time and energy to this amazing project. We are very grateful. I was surrounded with the best crew any builder could have and I am blessed to have so many wonderful friends who are passionate about what we as BIKERS represent said Athena Ransom, one of the Crew.

The Chicks Crew consists of Athena Ransom of Vagabond Chopper Co., who has been around motorcycles her entire life and riding since she was seven; Joann Bortles of Crazy Horse Painting, an award winning painter whose work has been featured in magazines like Easyriders, Ironworks, and American Iron; Jayme Gray from Pussy Cat Choppers, an avid motorcyclist with a degree from MMI and extensive V-Twin experience; Katie Putman from Mitch Bergeron’s, an MMI degree holder with tons of mechanical and building experience; Kate O’Shea another MMI degree holder and builder from Manatee River Harley Davidson, Vivian “Gypsy” Charros of Gypsy Highway Custom a creative, self taught, builder and Jena Lewis Truck/Trailer Chick from Vagabond Chopper Company.

Guilty Customs on Cover of Cycle Source April 07 Issue
Well, we have to admit, we knew we’d built a great bike, but to have someone such as Cycle Source say some very complimentary things about us, well, it’s humbling….and a bit scary. Besides us being on the cover, everyone should read or subscribe to this magazine. Chris (the editor) and the staff at Cycle Source are what this industry’s all about….the machines and the people that enjoy the lifestyle. Check them out!

Guilty’s Excited about Durfee’s New Front-end

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Can you believe this! Paul and the guys at Durfee have been listening to what we’ve been asking for and did they hit the target with this beauty! We can’t wait to see this one in stock here at Guilty. Since Guilty is a Distributor for Durfee Girders, you’ll be able to see this product in our store shortly and even better get one on your ride! This new front end is a descendent of the original Durfee Classic Girder, except the Model-21 has a graduate degree in weight training. A “wide-glide” width with big 1.5″ TIG welded tubes and billet 6061 T-6 aluminum CNC-machined parts ensure that the unit is as strong and long lived as the legendary original. Radically arched legs give this 21st century Durfee Girder a contemporary appearance and aggressive stance. Durfee partnered with Works Performance to fit a coil-over, adjustable shock absorber for a comfortable and controllable ride, cross-town or cross-country. Rubber isolated handlebar mounts use the industry standard spacing to give the builder/rider an almost unlimited choice of bars. What’s more, the Model-21 is designed to accept braking systems from Brembo, Performance Machine and Harley-Davidson.
If you are looking for something for your custom that is radically different, radically strong and very rideable, give us a call for pricing.

Errant Pic’s and Update

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

People have been asking us about our recent build, Errant. Which we were to roll out at the Rats’ Hole show in Daytona this year, but due to some mishaps, we didn’t. We’ll we’re almost done with her now, as we’ve taken a week or so off trying to shag some additional parts in order to make her just right. We’ve brought in Darren from “Darrendidit” pinstripping to lay down some awesome strips, and we’ve modified her a bit from the original concept. Overall this bike is something we thing we’ll see more of around the industry, as we’ve gone head first into “retro” mode. For example, Mike’s developed a suicide shift using an existing billet lower controls we’d gotten from HHI. We’re also using ChopperShox’s Dual seat springs on this rigid, as well as a Durfee Girder front end! So, as you’ll see, we’re going back a few years on this build. Check us out at the Rats Hole show in Leesburg at the end of April. Enjoy, Warden
