Riding Challenges

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

SoCalHaving now spend a few months in our transition to SoCal (currently splitting our time between CA and FLA), i’m finding that riding and exploring the area can be eye-opening and inspiring as well as fun. The roads here, (compared to the east coast and central Florida area), are well maintained and marked and beckon me to crank down on the throttle a bit more than normal. There are twisty hair pin mountain roads that merge into even more scenic coastal highways that then lead into hair raising interstates around the cities. BTW, who came up with the bright idea of “pavement grooving? Why am i saying all this? Well, first i greatly appreciate the riding opportunities here in SoCal and the helpful riders here that direct me to some of the coolest riding areas i’ve ever experienced. Second, in reading a story posted by Bikes In The Fast Lane, it made me appreciate even more the opportunities we have to enjoy our two wheel transports. Granted these pic’s make you say “What were they thinking when they made that road….?!?!” but take a look at some very interesting pic’s on his site. Click HERE

Hey, thanks for coming back! Great to see there are a few of you out there that have taste and style! Seriously, thanks for visiting. If you know of stories you think people would be interested in, shoot us a line C'ya!

Square Tube Girder from Guilty

Square Girder from Guilty

Guilty Customs expands it Square Tube Girder Line. With success from the previous release of the Narrow Glide Square Tube front-end, the gang at Guilty Customs are releasing two new expanded versions of this popular front end. The new addition, (aptly named Mid-Glide and Wide-Glide) will be made in stock or custom application lengths. “You can style a front end to look just about anyway you want it, but, if you want something that looks good, works properly and will last, you owe it to yourself to check out our newest product”, says Carl (CJ) Hanlon, owner of Guilty Customs of Florida. Cj’s passion for providing the riding community dependable and unique motorcycle parts is the reason for the release of these two unique front ends that harkens back to the earlier years of this industry. The unique styling, superior handling characteristics and superior grade materials used make this girder not only of interest to those nostalgia fans, but has gained the attention of custom builders. “We are only interested in producing truly unique and useable motorcycle parts”, says Hanlon. In keeping with the level of customization needed by today’s builders, the Guilty Square Tube Girders, can be built from 4″ under to 12″ over stock. Due to efficiencies of production, the base price is now $1525.00. Powder coating and or chroming available upon request. Guilty Customs, LLC (www.guiltycustoms.com) is a custom motorcycle and parts company that has established itself in the industry by bringing to the general public, innovative and affordable American made parts and custom motorcycles.

CARB allows S&S Engines in CA

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

ss-logo.jpgS&S Cycle has received executive orders from the powers to be at California Air Recourses Board (CARB), to sell S&S engines for “new build” custom bikes in the State of California. The engines covered by the executive orders are the S&S V100C, V113C, V124C and X117C. The V100C, V113C, and V124C are carbureted engines with displacements of 100, 113, and 124 cubic inches respectively. Again, all of these engines are intended for “new build” custom motorcycles. The S&S CA engines are similar to the existing S&S 49-State EPA engines, but were made compliant with California evaporative emissions requirements with the addition of a carbon canister, a vapor valve, an evaporative hose routing label, and a sealed air cleaner assembly on the carbureted models. Additional restrictions have also been applied to the maximum capacity of the fuel tank and the distance between the fuel tank and engine. Oh, yeah, one other note: these engines cannot legally be used to replace the engine in a previously registered vehicle. Apparently S&S is working toward approval of one or more replacement engines for 1984-’99 Harley-Davidson big twin motorcycles originally equipped with Evolution engines. They are expecting to hears something on this before the end of the year. Hmm, lets see, has CARB ever done anything on someone else’s timeline….nope. So we’ll see how long this takes.

Crane Cams Sells Assets

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

crane_cams_logo.gifS&S Cycle announces the acquisition of certain assets of Crane Cams Inc. Those assets include the inventory, intellectual property, and trademarks for all Crane automotive and motorcycle electronic products and for Crane motorcycle valve train products. The intellectual property portion includes designs, drawings, and cam profiles. Crane automotive valve train products are not included in this acquisition. Crane Cams was founded in 1953, and like S&S Cycle, founded in 1958, it has become a respected and iconic brand in the high performance industry.
S&S intends to continue to sell Crane products through the same distributors and dealers who have sold them in the past. To that end, they will establish a new facility in Daytona Beach, Florida to manage the business and provide customer service and technical support. This new facility will be staffed by many of the same personnel that Crane customers have worked with in the past, providing as seamless a transition as possible. While there may be some shortages of product in the near future, the Crane/S&S team will be working hard to fill back orders and meet future demand for Crane ignitions and motorcycle valve train components.
Since the acquisition does not include the Crane facility or equipment, manufacturing of valve train products will be moved to the S&S manufacturing facility in Viola, Wisconsin. S&S CEO George Smith comments: “The addition of this product line is a natural fit for our current in-house cam manufacturing capabilities as our equipment and processes are state of the art. We’re also excited that the highly successful Crane motorcycle and automotive electronics line is included with this acquisition. This will further strengthen S&S Cycle in the electronics field by providing additional expertise to improve our product offerings in late model ignitions, among other things.”

Friday, April 10th, 2009

shadetreefab_tail-lights-3.jpgThe guys at Shade Tree Fabrications are offering several new parts which we thought you’d like to see. Their parts take us back to a time when the use of hand-cast antique brass and aluminum were more common and they are using these everyday parts, such as school door knobs and microphones, in new and creative ways. That’s cool in our book! shadetree_fab_airscoop.jpgKyle Shorey (the mastermind behind STF) is fabricating these parts in Dallas Texas with some help from his friends and there are plans to release new parts in the coming months. So if i were you i’d keep an eye on his web site. You can get there by clicking HERE. Wouldn’t mind using some of these on one of our upcoming builds. Hey Kyle, give us a call will ya buddy!

A Lesson American Companies Should Learn!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

ktm-assemblers-edited.jpgWith the growing impact of the economy here in American reaching record levels, there is a lesson companies should be able to take away from this story about KTM. People are willing to cut their hours to keep their jobs! So, why not offer that to them instead of cutting the best and brightest and throwing them on the street? Here is the story we got from Australian Times. KTM announced it would put 733 of its 1,482 employees into part-time work from May until August. KTM said the measure would apply to all categories of employees, including white-collar employees as well as manual labourers. The firm said the measure would effectively result in two fewer months of production this year. The move comes after KTM’s announcement in late January it would lay off 150 workers in its leasing division and 150 core employees by April this year. KTM chief Stefan Pierer then warned in advance the firm might have to resort to part-time work at that time. Pierer added the company was planning to decrease production by 25 per cent but said he expected business to get slightly better next year. And he claimed the motorcycle industry was in better shape to survive the recession than the car industry since more people would opt for motorcycles during a recession. Meanwhile the company is to get a 30 million Euros capital increase from owner Cross Industries and its Indian partner Bajaj with the latter raising its interest in the firm to 30 per cent. KTM is also planning mass production of an electric-powered, all-terrain endurance bike within two years.

Riding SoCal “Guilty” Style

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

overshoulderridingedited.jpgYeah, we know that people envy the “Guilty” lifestyle. It’s just part of the burden we have to carry. And we’d not have it any other way, especially when we get to see some of the most incredible parts of this great country on two wheels. Ok, all ego’s aside. If you’ve not ridden in SoCal your really missing IT! We’ve been able to spend over 10 hours a day in the saddle (breaking in 2 BMW’s) streaking and navigating through rock slides and snow in the mountains to the beautiful sea shores and through miles and miles of orange orchards and then onto the desert floor and an inland sea. We’ve have the privilege of seeing some of the most rocky terrain we’ve ever seen and encountered a sand storm near Los Coyotes Indian Reservation and, ridden though 65 mph wind gust near Palm Springs on Hwy 10, as well as rain and great sunny weather; that was the first two days!. But what is it with all the DONUT shops? Seems they are on every corner! In one small city we counted 6 in two blocks. donutshopsedited.jpgAnyway, in spite of the donut shops, we have to give two thumbs up to SoCal for our riding experiences. Now we just have to figure out if we’re moving there or not. Update on that as we proceed. Oh, btw, we have shots of Kiwi Mike of Kiwi Motorcycles riding a H-D. Those pic’s available for blackmail shortly.
